Signs that it’s time for an oil change
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend getting an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on your vehicle and the type of oil you choose. But here are a few other signs that it’s time for a quick oil change:
- Excess vehicle exhaust: You should never see exhaust coming from the tailpipes if you drive a newer vehicle. If that’s the case—particularly if the exhaust is colored—your oil is too old to do its job properly and needs to be changed.
- Falling oil level: Topping off your oil can extend the time between oil changes, but if you notice that you’re filling up your oil reservoir more frequently, it’s time to come in for a full oil change.
- Increased engine noise: Motor oil tends to get thinner as it ages, and when that’s the case, your engine components can knock together and start to get loud. Bring your car to a mechanic right away if your engine starts getting louder while your car is running.
