Why Do I Need an Oil Change?

Why Do I Need An Oil Change

Hopefully, every car owner knows they need to get an oil change from time to time. But we’ve found that aside from being told by their mechanic that they need to come in for one, many drivers don’t fully understand why a quick oil change is so important. Luckily, we’re here to clear up any confusion! Keep reading to learn why you need an oil change every several thousand miles:

  • Better engine performance: All of the moving parts under the hood generate a ton of heat-producing friction. Changing your oil frequently reduces that friction and thus the amount of heat generated by it. When your engine runs at a lower temperature, you’ll enjoy better engine performance.
  • Extend engine lifespan: The friction mentioned above also causes small pieces of debris to break off and float through your engine. Despite being microscopic in size, this debris causes premature engine failure. The only way to eliminate it is with an oil change.
  • Reduce harmful emissions: Unless you drive an electric vehicle, your car puts out some emissions. But dirty, old motor oil produces more environmentally damaging emissions than a vehicle with fresh oil. Do your part to help Mother Nature by getting an oil change as soon as possible.
  • Better gas mileage: With gas prices on the rise, you should do everything you can to avoid filling up your tank too often. One of the best ways to improve your fuel economy is with an oil change. A well-lubricated engine is higher performing and gets more miles per gallon.
  • Catch up on other maintenance items: Most mechanics will perform other services when you get your oil changed. After changing the oil, a mechanic can perform an alignment to set your wheels straight and check under the hood to see if anything needs to be repaired or replaced.

Signs that it’s time for an oil change

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend getting an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on your vehicle and the type of oil you choose. But here are a few other signs that it’s time for a quick oil change:

  • Excess vehicle exhaust: You should never see exhaust coming from the tailpipes if you drive a newer vehicle. If that’s the case—particularly if the exhaust is colored—your oil is too old to do its job properly and needs to be changed.
  • Falling oil level: Topping off your oil can extend the time between oil changes, but if you notice that you’re filling up your oil reservoir more frequently, it’s time to come in for a full oil change.
  • Increased engine noise: Motor oil tends to get thinner as it ages, and when that’s the case, your engine components can knock together and start to get loud. Bring your car to a mechanic right away if your engine starts getting louder while your car is running.
